In some areas like Italy, traveling by canal is popular. In these areas one can ride a Gondola up and down seeing the sites of the city. They are expensive to ride, but worth the trip just for the ambiance and stunning look at history from a different point of view.
Some do not even consider transportation a problem when visiting other cities. Many countries still utilize train service for a great deal of their transportation needs.
